About the book
It began with the teenage crush of Yurko and Mariika, who lived on the same street in a village and sat in the same class at school.
You might think there is nothing special here, that this is an ordinary story of the kind that happens, if not to everyone, then to every other person. And you would be right! Besides, everyone knows first love rarely lasts. But Yura and Mariia’s love did not die: it grew into something deep and sincere. You would think there was only cause for joy, but certain tragic events happened, and youthful all-or-nothing pride and an inability to forgive kept the two apart for many years.
Both hoped their love would not survive the separation and would quietly fade away, but that is not how it turned out. Love simply refused to die, and a love that refuses to die is an endless source of suffering.
The novel has this title because it really is the confession of the grown-up Yurii about the effort he and Mariia had to make to overcome the desire to be together. Perhaps they succeeded. Or perhaps not. I won’t tell you. Find the answer yourself. But rest assured, life gave these two foolish lovers a hard time. If you ask me, they both had it coming; you read and draw your own conclusions.
